More Listening

“Once you meet with God, you’ll discover something amazing. You’ll find out He does more than just listen to you; He has a plan; plans to prosper you, give you hope, and always shed light on your great future. But to know these plans you have to stop and listen.”

Bob Beaudine, 2 Chairs

I first met Bob Beaudine and read his book, 2 Chairs, in 2019. Ever since then, I have started my morning routine with 2 Chairs. It is a simple concept that has had a profound effect not only on my mornings but on my whole day.

I get up early, brew a cup of coffee, and sit down in one of the two chairs I’ve set up for my first meeting of the day. Sometimes this meeting takes five minutes and other times much longer. Without fail, God takes His seat in the second chair.

Bob Beaudine learned the concept of 2 Chairs from his mother, Martha Beaudine, back in 1976. The idea is all about three (as Bob Beaudine says) “simple but disruptive questions – simple in why haven’t I asked them before and disruptive in that they quickly disarm me and showcase my limitations.”

The questions and answers I receive are great reminders that I don’t have to rely on my strength.

Those three questions Martha Beaudine shared with her son, Bob, all those years ago are:

Does God know your situation?

Is it too hard for him to handle?

Does He have a good plan for you?

Does God know your situation? Yes!

Is it too hard for him to handle? No!

Does He have a good plan for you? Yes!

Once I’ve quieted my racing thoughts enough to realize God is there in the other chair, I ask these questions. The remainder of my time in 2 Chairs is spent listening. I’ll often have a struggle or challenge in mind when I begin 2 Chairs. The answers I get may be about something entirely different. In my experience, what I’m hearing is usually a necessary step before we can get to the real issue. I incorporate journaling into my listening each morning, writing down what I hear.
